This is a dystopian novel, published in 1935 by a Nobel Prize winner.
In our opinion, it is of its time stylewise, and the amount of acronyms and American slang terms made us as a group struggle to get into it - to say the least! Indeed, so much so that only two of us persevered to the end - the others found it too much to try, which is totally understandable.
The main protagonists are initially Senator Berzelius "Buzz" Windrup, a charismatic fear monger, who is elected president of the USA, and Doremus Jessup, a liberal newspaper editor in Fort Beulah, Vermont.
The promises of the President to redistribute the nation's wealth and make America great has parallels with the present day under Trump. It's frightening to think that the actions and opinions of that time could be repeating themselves!!
This book was not a great one, as agreed by a majority, but it certainly gives food for thought. We hope that history will not repeat itself, but who knows? Perhaps it may be one that should be tried by keen readers. Over to you!
